Death is a bad reaper. It is not always after the ripe fruit. _Elechi Amadi
The concubine tells the story of a young lady who goes by the name Ihuoma. Ihuoma’s bodily features and attributes has earned a favourite spot on the hearts of many of the villagers, that includes both men and women. But this doesn’t last for long as it is later revealed( with the divination of the gods) that she’s no ordinary woman, but comes from the spirit world, where she’s already married to a sea-king, so any man who tries to have a relationship with her would always end up dead.
The story is told at a time when many still believed in small gods and the power they possessed over day-to-day happenings. One is exposed to the culture, traditions and beliefs of the Ibo people, at the time of existence of our ancestors, many of which are probaly considered obsolete today. Filled with lots of proverbial sayings and parables, The Concubine is an enjoyable read, especially for those who tend to embrace customs(both old and new) wholeheartedly.
Elechi Amadi tells his story in a suspense filled manner, making you itch for more while reading.
